Management Research Seminar: Janne Tienari on Autoethnography
In this guest seminar, Janne Tienari shares his experiences in doing autoethnography on his own and together with others. Autoethnography is a method of inquiry that describes and analyses the researcher’s personal experiences to understand organizational, social, and cultural phenomena. It is about studying a community through studying the self. It is notoriously difficult to convince others of the value of autoethnographies. Analytical autoethnographies aim to do this by striving for well-argued research and theorizing based on the researcher’s experiences. Janne reflects on his four analytical autoethnographic studies (including two collaborative autoethnographies with others), highlighting the challenges involved and how these challenges were tackled. Finally, Janne discusses an autoethnography that is work in progress. This focuses on studying humans and artificial intelligence. From the position of an organization and management scholar who is not an expert on AI technologies, Janne aims to develop an understanding of what it means to cope with AI as a moving target and slippery subject of critical inquiry.
Janne Tienari is Professor of Management and Organisation at Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki, Finland
